A recollection of skating on the Wallkill River about 1933-34. ~Larry Yeaple, Jan 24, 2012 I remember ice skating on a pond-like inlet of the Wallkill River behind the knife factory buildings, but further down as you head away from Walden. Think it was near the hat factory, Pellissier, Jonas & Rivet. He and friends from Capron Street (most probably Dave Lustig and Bob Ostrander) used to walk from Elberton Avenue down a steep hill, now part of Bradley park, to get to this special spot at the river’s edge. They would skate at “Crow’s Island,” their creative name for the spot. Lots of fun because it wasn’t too deep and the younger kids couldn’t get into much trouble if they fell through. Larry Yeaple was about 9 or 10 at the time and remembers falling flat and through the ice, where upon he was “reminded” that he had just ruined the skating for everyone!
